Midtown Manhattan. Land of extremes….the opulent and the average….and those on the edges. Skyscrapers dominate the landscape, many a symbol of wealth and seemingly power. They compete for a spot in the sky line and their design usually mean to “one up” a competitor. This is New York…everything is a competition. There was a time when you showed your wealth by the structures you built and how much ornate details were found on the facade and in grand lobbies. Today…it’s about how tall you can build and what’s on the inside that counts. I doubt we’ll ever see any more structures like the Chrysler Building with it’s over the top details (hub caps and protruding eagle heads). For now, I’m glad I get to admire these structures even if I have to fight through crowded streets to get a glimpse of perfection.
