I’m in Brick City (Newark, NJ), my old stomping ground. This is such a gritty city. You can see the scars of decades of urban decay, disinvestment and general hopelessness throughout the city. It’s suppose to be a new day, but faces are still worn showing the years of struggle to get by. Things shouldn’t be this way. There was wealth in this city. There is a major airport and shipping port. It’s only 15 to 20 minutes from Manhattan. Things should be different. But there not. Neighborhoods are still disconnected. The schools are still bad. Downtown wealth still doesn’t trickle down to the neighborhoods. It’s the same old Newark. Not much has changed…but I’m still hopeful for a better tomorrow.
