I think this is the 6th day that I’ve seen this guy sitting in there trying to stay warm. The winter streets are brutal. The underground provides some semblance of solace on bitter cold evenings. I’ve never seen him move. He is bundled up head to toe…with crumpled newspapers providing added insulation. I’m sure I’ll see him tomorrow. He’s the subway’s scarecrow sitting in place observing the sea of daily commuters that pass him by.
For a second there I thought I was back in 79′ when I boarded the train. That long coat and boots with heals was a dead give away for my time travel. I think that girl with the big head phones is actually listening to Super Freak right now. And Rick James is just posing out… hands on his hips and chillin against the wall. Any minute now he’s gonna break out in song….
‘She’s a very kinky girl
The kind you don’t take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street, ow girl’
In actuality it’s 2015 and apparently that Rick James style is making a come back! I’m about to add another 3 inches to my height when I get my boots!
It’s Sunday. It’s raining like crazy. And I’m on an open house mission. I started in Brooklyn. And then walked about 10 blocks to the nearest train to get to Manhattan. I’m soaked. Seriously. My waterproof boots don’t appear to waterproof anymore. Hell even my NorthFace jacket is getting damp. I guess this stuff wasn’t really made to be walking around all day in torrential downpour. And why the hell am I doing this to myself again. Will I ever win a bid? I don’t have a half a milli’ in cash. And even if I did I couldn’t see dropping it all for a crib. But that’s the world I live in. I can’t believe I’m trying Manhattan again. I saw two deals that made me put on the boots and rain coat. I’m hitting Chelsea (yes…Chelsea!) and Midtown (yes, midtown! near Columbus circle and Central Park!). We’ll see what comes of this adventure. This sure has been a crazy ride. I’m trying to stay underground as much as I can today. There is nothing good about cold rain. Nothing.
I love the New York City subway and the subway loves me! Seriously, doesn’t this guy look happy that I’m taking his photo. I know he is just doing his job, but today we are working together. It’s just me and the MTA and I’m happy (the train conductor, not so much).
I still haven’t figured out the best way to get to the office after my recent move. Some days I walk the .75 miles to the G train and then transfer at Court Square to the 7 train to Grand Central Station. Depending on the temperament of the G that trip usually takes about 35 / 45 minutes on a good day. And some times I walk the .75 miles to the M train. If I’m lucky I’ll catch a bus on Myrtle and take it to Broadway to the M. The M is local so it’s at least a 45 minute ride and then a 10 minute walk from Bryant Park. Both options kinda suck, but such is life right now while you are chasing rent in BK. I’m starting my home buying search again and this time I’m expanding it to the Bronx and Queens. Wish me luck.
